Until they leave something out. But then, Software is never a solution or a cure for bad behavior. Even IF the fact that he was in Africa was noted in the EMR, don't you think, given the current level of "awareness" that she might actually SAY SOMETHING to the doctor? Hmmm Let's see, patient, has fever, mentions they have been to "Africa" which, by the way is NOT specific enough... Should differentiate at least West Africa or individual countries, since Ebola is not occurring in many of them... but I digress...Fever and locale should have triggered alarms in the Nurse's head and she should have escalated the information verbally.

When you remove humans from the equation and presume that the computers will do the thinking and the work, you discover that the systems do not actually think nor do they work. They merely make entries in data bases. And to be fair to the developers on this one, you can't expect them to anticipate every possible scenario, which is why things should be more open. But don't tell them that.
But then we agree on things...staceyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08872800621811343464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10485390.post-24979944862819068702014-10-14T13:35:46.446-04:002014-10-14T13:35:46.446-04:00what you say about the software design and impleme...what you say about the software design and implementation may all be true, however, given the wide publicity over the past several months about the Ebola epidemic, should not the nurse who first interviewed Mr. Duncan have immediately gone out and informed the ER medical staff about the possible problem? We seem to be giving common sense a pass while focusing on technology.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17814200656420651747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10485390.post-48628209888459112682014-10-13T14:05:52.489-04:002014-10-13T14:05:52.489-04:00"Once again, here in the Health Care Field of..."Once again, here in the Health Care Field of Dreams, we have badly written, badly designed software, created with minimal input from those who have to use it, selected and then implemented by IT types who also don't have to use it and don't understand enough about those who do to get it done right."

I'm a doc who did IT in a previous life. You have hit the nail on the head. The software we have to use every day is a disgrace. Thanks for your column.Machahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01134507879758968527noreply@blogger.com
