The Dalai Can. . .

My Nuclear Medicine Techs have taken a page from my book of perverted songs, and wrote one about . . . me! Here it is with some minor changes to protect the innocent, and apologies to Willie Wonka, and Sammy Davis, Jr.:

Dalai, can you tell me if I have a monochrome1 image, but with the "Identity" value of Presentation LUT shape , then the resulted image will be shown as monochrome2?

No.

IDENTITY is not a legal value for Presentation LUT Shape when Photometric Interpretation is MONOCHROME1; the value is required to be INVERSE. See the description of Presentation LUT Shape in DICOM PS 3.3 C.7.6.1.

Reason is that for P-Values, lower numbers mean lower luminance.

Have you encountered images where this is not the case ? If so, send me an example.

Just to be clear, my previous comment about the combination of MONOCHROME1 and IDENTITY being illegal applies if both attributes are present in the image.

It occurs to me that perhaps you were meaning a MONOCHROME1 image but with a presentation state (GSPS object) applied to it, the latter containing an IDENTITY value in Presentation LUT Shape.

This is legal and would result in a stored pixel value of zero being displayed as black (not white, as it would be if there were no presentation state), assuming no intervening inverting modality or VOI LUT. Presentation states cause the value of Photometric Interpretation in the image to be ignored.

See PS 3.3 C.11.6.1 and PS 3.4 N.2.1.4.
